Beauty and the Beast | MOVIE REVIEW & DISCUSSION

Hey, guys! I am super excited to discuss this fantabulous movie known as Beauty and the Beast. Maybe you’ve heard of it? I actually had trouble being able to go to the theater to see it because my mother was refusing to take me there because she is boycotting it. But I will be getting into that in another post, which will probably be live next week. It isn’t going to really be about my mother, but it will be about Christians boycotting movies featuring LGBTQ+ representation. But anyway, let’s go ahead and get into the review!

Synopsis:

“Belle (Emma Watson), a bright, beautiful and independent young woman, is taken prisoner by a beast (Dan Stevens) in its castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the beast’s hideous exterior, allowing her to recognize the kind heart and soul of the true prince that hides on the inside.”

My Thoughts:

All right, we all know the story of Beauty and the Beast. If you haven’t seen the animated movie, I just have one question for you. Where have you been? I would say that most of the world has seen this movie. I haven’t actually met a person who hasn’t seen the animated version of this movie. But anyway, some questions that people have been asking me is whether I think this live action version is better than the animated version of Beauty and the Beast.

And the answer is yes.

There are several reasons why it is better. I honestly feel like I can connect to the characters more because they are real humans. They aren’t characters that are drawn and created in an animation studio. They are played by real, human beings and that just made me love the movie even more than I did the animated one (which is my favorite Disney animated movie, by the way).

I also just feel like they dive more deeply into the story. We see the backstory of the Beast/Prince. We see where he comes from, and we actually learn the backstories of the enchanted staff (this would be Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts and all of the other enchanted objects). They even fixed some of the plot holes (no spoilers, but it satisfied some of the most asked questions from the animated film).

And then there was the absolutely phenomenal acting. Emma Watson is absolutely fabulous (of course we already knew this because she was in Harry Potter). I loved seeing her portrayal of Belle. It was just such a genuine portrayal, and it was so satisfying to see her portray another character who loves books. Also, Belle is the most relatable character (to me, personally) that Disney has ever conjured up.

I also really loved Luke Evan’s portrayal of Gaston because his acting was so on point, and I actually liked his character a hell of a lot more than I did when I watched the animated movie. When I say I liked his character, I don’t mean him as a person. But his character is so brainless and so vain that it just absolutely cracks me up. Of course he pissed me off at points when he did horrible things because he is a terrible person, but he was so funny, and Luke Evans did a fantastic job in portraying him.

Can we just briefly talk about LeFou. This man was absolutely hilarious. If you remember from the animated film, he is Gaston’s sidekick. He was just as funny as Gaston, and he had a brain! He was just my heart and soul. Like I love this man. He actually is a pretty decent person, and while it took him a while to realize Gaston doesn’t give a rat’s ass about him, he does eventually redeem himself. But he is so sassy, and I just loved Josh Gad’s portrayal of him.

Also, while I really loved all of the enchanted objects, my favorite was definitely Mrs. Potts. She was so kind to Belle (just like she is in the animated film), but also she was sassy AF, and I freaking loved her. Like you do not mess with who she cares about. She will mess you up. She is also just a badass (yes, a tea kettle can totally be badass), and I really enjoyed her character. And Chip was absolutely freaking adorable. Also, Cogsworth arguing with Lumière was my everything. Those two were hilarious.

One of my favorite parts about this movie was how much it made me laugh. The humor in this movie was on point. I was almost constantly laughing. I cried several times while watching this movie, and it was just absolutely fantastic. Also, this movie just gives so much more backstory compared to the animated version. I just ended up loving it so much, and I would give this movie a 97% on my scale.
