Book Review: “Obsidian” by Jennifer L. Armentrout

***Warning: This review contains spoilers. If you wish to not know what goes on throughout this book, read the synopsis and don’t read any other part of this review.***

Synopsis:

“Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring… until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something… unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is.”

Characters:
Katy Swartz: Avid Reader, Blogger, her bff is Dee, and she gets under Dee’s brother’s skin, total crab (that’s putting it lightly) when you tick her off.
Dee Black: Alien, little ball of sunshine, super nice to everyone.
Daemon Black: Alien, most powerful, super protective of his sister, gives off image of complete douchebag, but it is later discovered *SPOILER* that he is in love with Katy and is very caring, will do anything to protect his family.
Ash Thompson: Alien, Daemon’s ex, totally hates Katy, super jealous, total word I can’t say
Andrew Thompson: Alien, hates Katy, very protective of his friends and family, Ash’s brother.
Adam Thompson: Alien, Ash and Andrew’s brother, semi-friends with Katy, very protective of his friends and family, would do anything for Dee, cares for Dee a lot.
Matthew Garrison: Alien, teacher at the school, thinks of the other Aliens as his ‘kids’, protective of them, acts as a mediator.

Plot: (WARNING: SPOILERS)
Katy moves to the small town with her mother because they wanted a fresh start. A few years before Katy’s dad had died. She moves in next door to Daemon and Dee. She meets Daemon first, he is very hostile and rude to her, this causes them to hate each other, she meets Dee, they become great friends, Daemon tries to scare Katy off, but she doesn’t budge. Dee refuses to drop Katy as a friend.

Daemon saves her a few times, which puts a trace on her, which causes the Arum (bad shadow aliens hellbent on absorbing all of the good Lux Aliens of their powers and killing them) to find her (a trace basically means, depending on how strong it is, she is lit up like the star atop a Christmas tree) so they can find the rest of the Lux aliens she knows. (Oh, I forgot to mention the fact that her and Daemon got in a fight, she runs out into the middle of the road when a truck is coming, he freezes it, saves her, puts another trace on her, and spills his guts about him and the rest of the gang being aliens). She is forced to spend time with him because she has to stick close to him so the Arum won’t try to kill her again until the trace fades.

She gets asked to homecoming by this meaty jock named Simon, he gets drunk, she tries to shake him, but he seem to be stuck to her like glue. She goes to this party with him and he nearly rapes her until Daemon freezes Simon, she kicks him in his manbits, Daemon unfreezes him, and he takes her home.

A bunch of crap happens and by crap I mean the rest of the gang find out she knows, tries to get Matthew or Daemon to turn her into the DOD (Department of Defense; yeah, they know. Restrict them a lot by having them sign these contract things whenever they get a driver’s license, marriage license, whatever. The DOD also makes sure no humans find out about the aliens. If a human finds out, the DOD makes them disappear.) He threatens to kill them, yada yada.

But before this, three Arum aliens (this was actually on the way home from the party after homecoming) attack them, Daemon gives Dee obsidian blade to protect her, tells her to run, she doesn’t listen, goes back, kills one Arum (Damon had already killed one), and the third runs off.

Brief make out scene between Katy and Daemon. He avoids her like the plague after. Daemon and the rest of them (except for Dee) start looking for the third Arum aliens, Arum alien starts heading for Dee and Katy (they are at Dee’s house), Katy convinces Dee to put a huge trace on her, making her light up like the mixture of a huge light bulb and a Christmas tree.

She leads the Arum alien to the field the party from homecoming was at, he nearly kills her, Daemon goes after the Arum alien (comes upon him nearly killing Katy), Dee soon follows, the Arum alien nearly kills all three of them, Daemon gives Katy the last bit of energy he has (nearly), she makes a link between him, her, and Dee, Katy destroys the Arum alien.

They keep that little secret to themselves and don’t share that with the rest of the aliens. Daemon goes off for a few weeks to make sure there are no more of the Arum aliens, comes back saying its safe, him and Katy discover they are linked, Daemon wants to go out with Katy, she says no because she doesn’t want the link to be the only reason he goes out with her or the fact that he finds her attractive. He is determined and says that he loves a challenge. The book ends with Katy saying, ‘So do I.”

Description of Lux Alien Forms:
Its kind of hard to explain, so what I can say is that it is like they’re made of light. They speak through minds when they are in that form. They do not harm humans when in that form. It is pleasant for the humans when they touch the Lux aliens.

My thoughts:
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I really related to Katy’s character because I am a huge reader, and I blog. It was really well written, and I felt there was a lot of character development. I also really like the fact that throughout the entire book you think you have Daemon’s character figured out, and then this little twist at the end lets you know, “Oh, wait. He isn’t a complete douchebag.” I just really loved it and would recommend it to anyone. I usually do not read books about aliens, but I absolutely loved this one. I can’t wait to read the next one!

LOVE YOU ALL TO LUNA AND BACK,

ALLIE
